Fatima, Portugal, 1917:

Fatima, Portugal is one of the most famous places in the entire world, known for the revelations of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children. The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared to these children near the town of Fatima, between May 13 and October 13, 1917. The Blessed Virgin told them she had been sent by God with a message for every man, woman and child. This message came at a time when all of civilization was torn apart by war and bloody violence. She promised that Heaven would grant peace to all the world if her requests for prayer, reparation and consecration were heard and obeyed.

"If my requests are granted ... there will be peace"

The Pilgrimages to Fatima:

The principle pilgrimage festivals take place on the thirteenth day of each month from May to October, on the anniversaries of the original appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pilgrims attend these festivals to pray and witness processions of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima during the day and evening. On the evening of Oct 13th, 1951, a million people holding a lighted candle filled the Fatima shrine and the surrounding area. This was such an incredible accomplishment if one knew how small this sacred place really is, one could say this was also a miracle!

The light from a candle is the symbol of Christ, the Light of the World. Lighting a candle goes back to ancient times. People believe a candle will illuminate the right path within their lives. A sacred flame will guide people for solutions to their problems or situations and bring about peace and comfort.

On Oct 13, 1951 one million people gathered at Fatima Portugal and held lite candles. If you knew how small Fatima really is, you would be amazed they fit a million people at Fatima. This was a miracle in itself. A million candles, a million prayers to heaven.

The Importance of Candles:

Candles have been a part of man's celebrations for more than 5,000 years. Candles have been bringing light and illumination to the dark and therefore hold a realistic and symbolic presence to mankind.

It is believed that the Ancient Egyptians were responsible for developing the first candles. They were used as rushlights or torches made by soaking the pithy core of reeds in melted animal fat. Rushlights or torches did not have a wick, as we know candles today.

The Egyptians did use wicked candles around 3,000 BC, though it is believed that the wicked candle was developed by the Ancient Romans. They would dip rolled papyrus, repeatedly, in melted tallow or beeswax to light their homes and use them in religious ceremonies.

Candles have played a major role in religious ceremonies dating back to Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. This festival centers on the lighting of candles and dates back to 165 BC.

Candles Today:

Although candles are no longer used for our daily lighting needs, they remain an extremely popular item in our lives. Candles are still incorporated in many religious ceremonies, for romantic atmosphere, soothing our senses.

Candles add an almost mysterious atmosphere that is calming and inviting. The warm glow of candle light is embraced by millions of people and today itís a two billion dollar market.. There is no sign of them losing popularity.
